Completing Your Apprenticeship
Course Completion Is an Important Milestone — But There Is One More Step
Completing your PHCC Academy coursework is a major part of your apprenticeship, but your Related Technical Instruction (RTI) and your on-the-job training requirements must both be completed before your registered apprenticeship is considered complete.
The PHCC Academy apprenticeship program consists of:
576 total Related Technical Instruction hours
8,000 hours of On-the-Job Training
Keep Your Records
As you move through your apprenticeship, keep copies of important records, including:
- Course completion records and transcripts
- Employment records
- W-2s
- On-the-job training documentation
- Apprenticeship registration information
- Your U.S. Department of Labor Certificate of Completion when issued
DOL Registered under your Employer
Students should make sure their employer and apprenticeship sponsor have properly documented all required on-the-job training hours. and can now complete hem to generate your DOL Completion Certificate.
DOL Registered under NJPHCC
Make sure all of your OTJ hours have been submitted to us along with your 4th year ending hourly wage. Have your employer request your completion with us by contacting academy@nj-phcc.org.
These documents may be important when you move on to journeyman registration and eventually apply for the New Jersey Master Plumber licensing examination.
What Happens After Apprenticeship?
Your Journeyman Year
Completing your apprenticeship does not immediately make you eligible to take the New Jersey Master Plumber licensing examination. Under current New Jersey requirements, an applicant who qualifies through a U.S. Department of Labor-approved four-year apprenticeship must also complete:
One Year as a Journeyman Plumber in New Jersey
That year must include at least:
1,200 hours of practical, hands-on plumbing experience (W-2 proof)
Important: Should I register with Board as a journeyman?
According to the Board of Examiners, the journeyman application is only for those seeking to be a career Journeyman. Anyone who will be seeking license need not apply for the journeyman registration.
